The Day I Discovered Massage

Apr 12, 2014

Working at the Natural Therapy Pages for many years now has really spiked my interest in the wellbeing of myself and others close to me. I’ve learned about so many different modalities, what benefits they have and how they can really help and impact people’s lives. One of the things I’ve always had a big interest in is Massage. I’ve had many massages myself, usually when I am feeling stressed with day-to-day life or just to relax when on holiday with friends and family. However, it was never something I thought I would be able to do myself…

When I came across Discover Massage Australia and the two day Certificate in Whole Body Massage course, it got me wondering if I could turn my love for massage into something I could do myself and use to help my friends and family. And that’s where my journey began.

I spoke with Cameron Aubrey, the Course Director, who told me all about the course, what it involved, and what I would take away from it. I was worried that I had never given anyone a massage before, but he assured me the course was for all levels of competency. Feeling more confident, I immediately booked in for the two day course in November in Parramatta, Sydney.

ATTENDING THE COURSE

I arrived on the Saturday morning feeling a little nervous. I was unsure what to expect and worried I may feel a little out of my depth. All those fears were put to the side, however, when I was greeted with a warm welcome by the trainers Kerilyn and Amro. They gathered us together and explained in detail how the weekend would go and what to expect. Most of us were beginners and they put everyone at ease, which really helped. After we all introduced ourselves, our training began.

Kerilyn and Amro demonstrated to us what we were to do and explained why the methods were being used. They were very thorough and ensured that everyone followed what was going on. It was then our turn to put it into practice. With the guidance of our trainers, we all got into the swing of it and started gaining confidence, with support and guidance on hand if we weren’t quite doing it correctly. The majority of the course was completely hands-on and we all gained so much knowledge and technical skill over the course of the two days. When it came to our assessments on Sunday, although nervous, we all felt confident and competent with what we had to do.

I PASSED!

At the conclusion of the course, I received my Certification in Whole Body Massage. I was also pleased to see that all of my fellow students gained their certificates too. After we all passed our assessments, our trainers talked to us about where we go from here. They discussed how we could start our own massage businesses and gave us lots of practical advice and direction on gaining clients and obtaining insurance. We also discussed how to gain membership with the Massage Association of Australia.

All the students commented on how fantastic the course was and how pleased they were that they attended. The students I met ranged from Energy Healers, Reiki Practitioners and Yoga Instructors – each of whom were excited to put this new found skill to use in their business. Myself, I have already begun giving massages to my friends and family and getting great feedback. So who knows what it might lead to?

Attending the course over a weekend was great for me. I was able to fit it in between my Monday – Friday job and the hours were great too – starting at 9.00am and finishing in time for me to be home by 7pm, I still felt like I had some “free time” on Saturday and Sunday.

I would highly recommend this course to anyone who is interested in learning more about Whole Body Massage and who wants to develop this as a career. The course was highly professional, thorough, hands on and also lots of fun!
