Massage Therapy Insurance
Insurance within the Massage Therapy industry
Do you need public liability insurance? Some think not and before talking with Barry from RGIB I would have thought the risk to be minimal, but the number of claims are both surprising and increasing, so if you have no public liability insurance you are taking a huge risk, even if you only do gentle relaxation massage, people sue you for anything and everything these days; Much better having the peace of mind by being insured.
What are you insured for? As a massage therapist you are insured and covered for any modality or treatment for which you have had instruction. For example. massaging a pregnant women, if you have received no instruction regarding how you go about massaging a pregnant lady, then you are not covered should she lose the baby after the massage and sue you, but if you have had instruction on how to go about massaging her along with dangers to be aware of then you are covered. You are not covered for any manipulation unless you are a manipulative therapist who has the qualifications to do so. So in short you must always work within the boundaries of what you have been taught, have evidence you have received instruction for the treatment you perform, and you will be covered without any problems, go outside the boundaries or not have evidence of instruction and you run the risk of causing injury as well as not being covered.
In closing if you want to be professional you must do everything in a professional manner, joining and having your MAA association membership on your wall gives your clients the peace of mind that you belong to a recognised body, and also gives you the opportunity of taking advantage of the very affordable public insurance. Even if you do mobile massage you should have a folder you can show your client before the massage begins, you would put your membership certificate on the first page, followed by your certificates or copies of, then fill the rest of the folder with testimonies, which goes a long way to making the person feel comfortable way before the massage begins.
NOTE: As a committee person with the MAA we are striving to keep the costs as low as possible so there is no excuse not to be a member, and with the special deal we offer for insurance, you really cannot afford to be without it. Both the MAA, & myself are truly concerned about this, and have kept the fees very affordable in the hope you will do the wise thing, look professional with your membership certificate on the wall, and have the peace of mind that you are well covered should you be sued for any reason.
